About this deal

What’s more, the buds incorporate a couple of the best features from their over-ear stablemates, the Sony WH-1000XM4. Speak-to-Chat has been added, as has the ability for the buds to learn about places you visit and automatically switch noise-cancelling profiles to suit those environments.

More importantly, though, they’re supremely comfortable. At 255g, they’re around 25% lighter than the B&W PX (my previous favourite), and you can feel it. It means less pressure on the super-soft headband and earcup padding, so they feel pleasant for a long time, though your ears will get warm, as with most over-ear gear. Given this history of constant innovation, it's hardly surprising to learn that the company has a strong reputation for headphone design. Iconic large-padded models like the MDR-V6 (introduced in 1985) have been a mainstay in living rooms and around the heads of pedestrians for generations now. And since then, the pace of development hasn't slowed. It is very disappointing that you cannot use the equalizer with the high quality LDAC Bluetooth codec.I hope that Sony will solve this very bad issue soon. The other design change is the new flush fit that changes out the old padding on the bridge for something a bit more cushiony. This makes these over-ear headphones more comfortable, and less dorky-looking when they’re on your head. Sony’s also deepened the earcup and changed out the silver accents on the side of the headphones for a stylish copper tone instead. You can also choose how long you want it to remain active after speech to ensure the mode doesn’t close mid-conversation. The “short” (five seconds) and “standard” (15 seconds) options felt a little restrictive to me, but 30 seconds proved ample. If you’ve got a particularly chatty partner or friend you can choose to prevent the mode from shutting down automatically and manually end it by touching either of the earbuds. That said, while these headphones are fine for the occasional call or two they’re probably not what you’d want to use if you frequently make phone calls in an office setting – call quality isn’t as pristine on the 1000XM3 as it is on other business-ready headsets. Battery life It's clear that the Sony WH-1000XM3 price has been designed for the everyday. In fact, these days they come in fairly cheap compared to their counterparts with similar specs. Plus, their strong battery performance, foldable design, and integration with Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant attest to a lifestyle focus.

Of course, Sony has now replaced the WH-1000XM3s with the WH-1000XM4s and – spoiler alert – they're even better. The XM3s are therefore now the second-best pair of noise-cancelling headphones you can buy but, thanks to some heavy discounting, they're still an excellent buy while you can still get them. the touch controls are good, but if you are in wired mode (eg sitting on a plane for 14 hours plugged into their movies) then they no longer work. They only one that does work is putting your hand over the RH cup to mute the sound. Physical buttons would have been better, but how old fashioned. This headset has been well thought out for wireless use. Equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 technology, it offers the best current compatibility with AAC, LDAC and even HD aptX support, which keeps quality loss to a minimum. Easy to pair, the headset also features NFC to speed up the detection of devices to be connected through the fast pair feature. The headphones are outfitted with a multitude of Bluetooth profiles such as HSP for profiling personal settings, AVRCP for controlling the audio side of videos and A2DP for setting the headphones' audio distribution. Long Battery LIfeI have owned the Sony headphones for over 3 years now and am extremely satisfied. I originally bought them for the home office to have more quiet while working and to be heard better in meetings. Meanwhile, I also use it to watch TV or gamble when my partner wants some peace and quiet from me :)

Sony has improved the quality and increased the quantity of microphones used for voice calls, so whoever you’re talking to should hear you more clearly. But if you’re more concerned with keeping the outside world at bay, Sony has also improved its already superb noise-cancelling. You can now set the function to be permanently on, even when not playing anything, meaning that you can use the noise-cancelling to quieten everything down for a peaceful nap. If you're choosing between the Sony WH-1000XM3s and the newer XM4 headphones, you're likely deciding whether to take the price cut on the older model and sacrifice some of the latest features in doing so. As far as cutting edge headphones go, the key match-up here is the Sony WH-1000XM3 vs Bose QuietComfort 35 II. Both are advanced wire-free devices with excellent sound quality, and both incorporate what the manufacturers claim are path-breaking noise cancellation technologies. That's why the QC35 is part of the “Quiet Comfort” collection. I’d definitely recommend making use of the Sony WH-1000XM3’s capacity for LDAC and aptX HD codecs. If your (Android) device is compatible, these codecs offer a higher data transfer rate, and the difference is very noticeable. They replaced the already excellent WH-1000XM3 in August 2018, and since then they’ve been ushered out by the WH-1000XM4, which themselves have been replaced by WH-1000XM5. Finally, the Sony also swapped out the microUSB port on the right earcup for a more modern USB Type-C charging port.
